Peter Motale was born in 1947 and grew up in South Africa during the apartheid

era. His family experienced forced relocations due to the Group Areas Act. Peter is the oldest of two children, was hence exposed and trained to work hard from a young age in the family businesses. Peter underwent the Xhosa custom-based circumcision without his parents' knowledge, facing initial opposition. His father, affected by the Group Areas Act, had lost his own cultural traditions. Peter hence organized and completed the rite, leading to family acceptance. Peter got married at 25 and faced challenges as the municipality did not recognize his marriage. He and his wife had three children and experienced housing issues before being issued a house in Gugulethu.

Despite apartheid restrictions, Peter sought to practice what he learned at school. He was initially denied a business permit, but took on a job offloading ships at docks to maintain his urban residence permit. He then orchestrated a plan to have someone substitute for him to avoid arrest and continue working on his business ideas. Peter started his own transportation service, initially using a borrowed car. He faced challenges with permits due to apartheid policies but notwithstanding continued to expand his transportation business. The business grew, and Peter purchased vehicles to transport passengers from Cape Town to Transkei.
